There are several tournament types, and problems that may occur when talking about them, so here are some questions and answers to help you out.
Q: What can I post here?
A: Any decks or questions about decks that see play in different levels of tournament play.
Q: Levels of play? Like what?
A: There are several tournament styles. They are Standard, Extended, Vintage, Block, Two-Headed Giant, and Legacy. Casual is not, I repeat, IS NOT a tournament style.
Q: Okay, then. So I guess that means my Flock of Rabid Sheep is a good card to use, then.
A: Sorry, but unglued and unhinged aren't legal in any tournament.
Q: Not even the lands?
A: The lands are.
Q: But you just said...
A: I know, I know. How about this: White and Black Bordered cards are the only legal ones. No gold or silver allowed in any format.
Q: Okay then, what is allowed then?
A: Well, in standard it's the last two blocks and the last core set. An example is this. Block A(Mirrodin) and Block B(Kamigawa) are in print, and so is 8th edition. Ninth edition comes along. Standard is now Mirodin Block, Kamigawa Block, and 9th. Block C(Ravnica) comes with it's first set, Ravnica. Mirrodin, Darksteel, and Fifth Dawn are out, and the standard is now Kamigawa, Ravnica, and 9th.
Q: What if I own an earlier printing of a card from a core set?
As long as it's been printed in one of the standard legal sets, you can use it.
Q: Okay then, what about Vintage?
A: Vintage is open to any and all cards, other than Unsets, chaos orb, falling star, and cards that mention ante. There is a hefty restricted list, though.
Q: Restricted, as in banned?
A: No. Restricted as in "One Per Deck." These include such power spells as Black Lotus, Ancestral Recall, and Balance.
Q: Is there a list of these restricted cards somewhere?
A: Yes, there is. You can find it here
Q: So what about extended?
A: Currently, all sets from Invasion to now(other than Unhinged) are legal in extended. There are 4 cards banned in it( AEther Vial, Disciple of the Vault, Entomb, and Skullclamp).
Q: What is legacy then?
A: The same as vintage, but all cards on the restricted list are banned, as are a few more. The extensive banned list can be found here.
Q: Two-Headed Dragon is what then?
A: Two-Headed Giant Constructed decks must contain a minimum of sixty cards. There is no maximum deck size; however, you must be able to shuffle your deck with no assistance. Two-Headed Giant uses the Unified Deck Construction rules. With the exception of basic land cards, a team's combined decks may not contain more than four of any individual card, counted by its English card title. (For example, if one player is using four Naturalizes in a Multiplayer Constructed event, no other player on that team may have a Naturalize in his or her deck.) Sideboards are not allowed in Constructed Multiplayer tournaments. In addition to this, Erayo, Soratami Ascendant is banned.
Q: And block is what?
A: Other than being in the last question, the main rules for block are found here.
I hope this provides some help for tournament types.
